Volunteers - By the time the Clinic celebrated its second anniversary, it had attracted close to 150 medical and non-medical volunteers. The number of volunteers has remained steady over the years and they continue to be the heart and soul of the Clinic operation.
Specialty Clinics - From the very beginning, medical specialists have volunteered to work at the Clinic. This has allowed the Clinic to broaden the scope of its services significantly. Mercy Health Clinic currently is able to offer the following specialty clinics: Gynecology, Dermatology, ENT, Orthopedics, Urology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Endocrinology and Diabetes.
The Pharmacy Program - The Carl A. Nordberg Pharmacy Fund was established in 2003. The purpose of the fund was to increase the number of prescription drugs the Clinic could dispense to patients free of charge. In the intervening years the pharmacy program has received significant support from Montgomery Cares, the Knights of Malta, a several pharmaceutical companies, and a number of doctors’ offices that provide the Clinic with free samples. As a result of this support, close to 95 percent of the drugs that are prescribed for our patients are made available to them free of charge.
Education Programs - A bi-lingual Diabetes Specialty Clinic was established in 2001. This Clinic program provides our patients with education and counseling related to diet and medical care to foster continuing well-being and successful disease management. In 2002, a nutrition and lifestyle program was started to target obesity and related health problems of Clinic patients. This program has been significantly restructured and now relies heavily on the involvement of members of the community to promote awareness of the importance of exercise and diet.
New Facility - In June 2007, Mercy Health Clinic moved to a new facility in Gaithersburg that has nine exam rooms and twice the space we had at the old clinic location in Germantown. The Clinic has made a commitment to increase its patient base by 25 percent in the coming year.
Behavioral Health Program - Before the end of 2007, Mercy Health Clinic will partner with Montgomery Cares to provide services that are designed to diagnose and treat depression and anxiety in our patient population.
Dental Health - In December 2007, the Montgomery County Division of Public Health will open a dental clinic adjacent to Mercy Health Clinic. MHC patients will be eligible to receive dental care at this site.
